English translation after Finnish text

Juhannus on ohi, mutta onhan kesää vielä jäljellä vaikka lomat onkin tältä erää lusittu. Takaisin töihin, muutama päivä meni niin ettei ehtinyt reissua ajattelemaankaan mutta vihdoinkin pääsin istahtamaan taas toimivan tietokoneen ääreen.

Kiitos IT-osasto, saitte koneen kuntoon eikä edes mitään hävinnyt.

Olen käynyt Norjassa muutamalla lyhyellä reissulla aiemminkin, ensimmäisen kerran moottoripyörällä jo 70-luvulla mutta vasta nyt ensimmäistä kertaa pitempään kuin pari päivää.

Luonto on todella kaunista niin pohjoisen karuilla rannoilla kuin vähän etelämpänäkin jossa Atlantin rannikolla voisi äkkiä luulla olevansa vieläkin etelämpänä.

Vuoria ja vuonoja on niin paljon että tien, tunnelien ja siltojen tekijöillä on töitä riittänyt ja riittää vielä pitkään. No onhan Norja rikas maa ja rahaa riittää infraankin toisin kuin Suomessa, Venäjästä nyt puhumattakaan.

Reissun aikana bongattiin sähköautoja, lähinnä Tesloja, kun niistä niin paljon puhutaan.

Ensimmäisin päivinä tuntui siltä että taitavat puhua potaskaa kun ei yhtään tunnistettavaa tullut vastaan. Tromssan lähellä tuli ensimmäiset pari vastaan, sitten oli vähän hiljaisempaa, kunnes Trondheimissä niitä näimme toista kymmentä.

Kristiansundissakin niitä oli enemmän kuin yhdessä kädessä on sormia, eli uskottava on että Norjassa on sähköautoja. Lisäksi näimme kymmeniä tavallisempia malleja kuten Nissaneita ja vastaavia jopa pari BMW i3:stakin.

Lampaita oli lukematon määrä, pohjoisessa enemmän kuin etelämpänä missä ne olivat pääsääntöisesti aitauksissa. Pohjoisessa etsivät ruokansa mistä parhaiten löysivät = tien penkoilta.

Poroja oli vähemmän kuin mitä muilla pohjoisen reissuilla olen nähnyt, olisikohan viileällä säällä osuutensa tähän.

Itikoita ei ollut eli on sateesta jotain hyötyäkin. Edellisen reissun jälkeen valkoinen kypärä oli kaikkea muuta kuin valkea.

Reissun kuluja ynnäillessä totesin että Suomea kalliina pitäneenä ja Venäjän hintatasoon tottuneena Norja on tosi kallis.

Kahvi maksaa huoltamolla halvimmillaan 3€/kuppi ja kaljatuoppi ravintolassa 20€,

2 - hengen hotellihuone alkaen 100€. Toki halvemmallakin pääsee mutta sitten ostetaan kaljat ja ruoat kaupasta ja kokataan itse.

Telttamajoitukseen en enää tällä iällä lähde varsinkaan näillä keleillä mitä nyt kohdalle sattui.

Muuten olen valmis lähtemään joskus vielä uudelleenkin Norjaan, eteläinen osa on näkemättä.

Ensi kesänä minne, ehkä Ranskaan; Kreikan reissukin on vielä tekemättä.

Syksyllä on kuitenkin tarkoitus lähteä Jyrkin kanssa Elbrukselle…

Midsummer is over and done, a lot of summer yet left even though no holidays for a while. Back to work, a couple of days to get understanding what has happened and what not but finally I had some time to sit with my computer that is ok again.

Thanks to our IT department who fixed it and did not loose information.

I’ve been in Norway some short visits before, first time with motorcycle in 70´s but only now more than a couple of days.

Nature is really gorgeous as well in rugged north as in southern part of the country where especially close to the cost one could imagine to be even further south.

Mountains and fjords so much that the road, tunnel and bridge constructors have had a lot of work and there is a lot of to do. Well, Norway is a rich country and has money for infra not like Finland, not even to talk about Russia.

During our ride we looked at electric cars, mainly Tesla´s as they are been talked so much Norway to be full of. First days nothing, I started to think that all this talking is pure shit as not el.cars detected. Close to Tromso we saw the first ones and then nbot so many until in Trondheim I saw more than 10 Tesla´s.

In Kristiansund there were more of them than fingers in one hand, so have believe that there electric cars in Norway. Also we saw unnumbered amount of usual models like Nissans and also couple BMW i3.

Sheeps we saw a countless amount, more in north than in south where they were mainly inside bars. In north they wandered around trying to find something to eat, mainly at road sides.

Raindeers I saw less than on previous time in north, maybe the cool weather has something to do with that.

No mosquitos, so there some advantages of the rainy weather. Previous time the white helmet was far away of being white when back.

When counting together the cost of the ride I noticed that as I’ve been considering Finland to be expensive while used to the price level of Russia, Norway is really expensive.

A cup of coffee costs at gas station 3€ and one beer in restaurant 20€, 2-bed hotel room is starting from 100€/night. Of course it’s possible to travel cheaper but then you have to buy food and beer from a supermarket and do your meal yourself.

Sleeping in a tent I’m too old especially on weather like we had this time.

Otherwise I’m ready to go to Norway again as I have yet been in the southern part of the country.

Where to go next summer, maybe to France or Greece, who knows.

This autumn I’m anyway going to go to see the Elbrus with Jyrki...

Stockholm – Turku - Mikkeli

Hyttimme sijaitsi laivan 7 kerroksessa mikä oli hyvä valinta.

Ensimmäisellä Itämeren kierroksella tein sen virheen että varasin halvimman mahdollisen hytin joka sijaitsi suoraan yökerhon alapuolelle, Ei toivoakaan nukkumisesta varsinkin kuin rakkaan naapurimaamme Ruotsin nuoriso saapui samalle hyttikäytävälle jatkamaan bileitään yökerhon sulkemisen jälkeen.

No, virheistä pitää ottaa oppia…

Tällä kertaa saimme nukkua rauhassa varsiin raskaan ajopäivän jälkeen.

Aamulla hytissä tuoksui ”motoristi” varsin voimakkaasti mutta eihän se meitä häirinnyt.

Myöhäisestä saapumisesta laivaan oli se hyöty että pääsimme ensimmäisten joukossa ulos ja tienpäälle.

Mikan hyvästeltiin ensimmäisenä ja Jorma vähän myöhemmin.

Lahden jälkeen 4/5 tiellä oli jo nähtävissä juhannuksen läheisyys jonoutuvassa liikenteessä. Enimmäkseen aika rauhallista etenemistä nopeusrajoitusten mukaan vaan ainahan joukossa on joku jolla on olevinaan kovempi kiire.

Mikkelissä oli siivottu sortuneen sillan jätteet pois eli ei mitään nähtävää.

Kotona juhannukseen viettoon...

Ajomatkaa reissun viimeiselle päivälle kertyi 377 km ja koko matkalle yhteensä 6015 km

Our cabin was in the 7th floor of the ship, no bad selection.

On the first ride around the Baltic Sea I made a mistake by booking the cheapest possible cabin that was just above the night club. No hope for a good sleep especially as the youth of our dear neighbor Sweden came to the same corridor where our cabin was to continue partying after closing the night club.

Well, one must learn of mistakes.

This time we could sleep well after tough day.

In the morning the cabin smelled heavily for “biker” but that did not bother us.

The advantage of late arrival was that we got out from the ship among the first ones  and directly on the road.

To mike we said goodbye first and a bit later to Jorma.

After the city of Lahti on the highway 4/5 it was already visible that people were on the road to countryside to celebrate the Midsummer as there were much more traffic than usual. Mostly driving quite ok according to rules but always there are someone’s in hurry.

In the city of Mikkeli the ruins of collapsed bridge had been cleaned, so nothing to see.

At home just to celebrate Midsummer.

The last day of the journey I rode 377 km and totally 6015km.

Ottå – Stockholm

Aamiainen oli pyynnöstämme katettu normaalia aikaisemmin, mistä vielä kiitokset isännälle.

Aamiaisen jälkeen hyvästelimme Pekan ja Helenan jotka lähtivät liikkeelle myöhemmin määränpäänään Ruotsi jonne he olivat menossa juhannukseksi.

Mika, Jorma ja minä lähdimme pikamarssille kohti Tukholmaa ja Viking Linen Amorellaa joka lähtee Tukholman keskustasta klo 20.00 Turkuun.

Alkumatkalla sää oli pilvinen, Lillehammerin ja Hamarin välinen tieosuus oli remontissa ja Norjalaisella ajotavalla matka eteni hitaasti mutta varmasti.

Vähän ennen Ruotsin rajaa alkoi sataa ja sitä sitten riitti lähes Tukholmaan saakka. Emme pitäneet muita taukoja kuin pakolliset tankkaustauot hampurilaisaterian kera.

Tukholman lähellä navi ohjasi meidät aivan eri reittiä kuin viime vuonna Gamla Stan ja Slussenin kautta ja kello kävi. Kieltämättä alkoi jo mielessä käydä, ehditäänkö laivaan vai ei. Onneksi Tukholman autoilijat olivat suvaitsevia eivätkä suuremmin ärsyyntyneet meidän ehkä venäläistyneestä ajotavasta käyttäen kääntyvien kaistoja hyväksi…

Ehdimme laivaan aivan viimeisten mukana ja täytyy myöntää että kylmä olut maistui todella hyvältä.

Ajovarusteet olivat aika kosteat vaikka gortexit toimivatkin niin kuin pitääkin.

Päältä märät ja sisältä kuivat, paitsi ajosaappaat jotka joutuvat tämän reissun jälkeen kierrätykseen.

Ajomatkaa päivälle kertyi 754 km

Breakfast was served by our request early, special thanks to the kitchen and the innkeeper.

After breakfast we said goodbye to Pekka and Helena, who stayed later and the rode to Sweden for midsummer.

Mika, Jorma and I started to ride towards Stockholm and Viking Lime ship Amorella that was leaving from Stockholm to Turku at 20:00.

First the sky was cloudy, the road from Lillehammar to Hamar was under construction and with the Norwegian way to drive it took time.

Just before the border of Sweden it started to rain and that lasted almost all the way to Stockholm.

We stopped only fuel the bikes and for one quick hamburger. When reaching to Stockholm the navigator guided us to a totally different route as last year to Gamla Stan and Slussen and time was running out. I already started to doubt can we make the ship or not. Luckily the Stockholm car drivers were tolerant and did not get angry of our a bit like Russian way of riding using the turning lanes…

We made it just on time and I have to admit that the cold beer of the ship tasted really good.

Our riding outfits were quite wet even though the Goretex worked as planned.

Wet on top, dry inside except the boots that after 4 riding seasons are ready to be recirculated.

Today we rode 754 km

Kristiansund - Ottå

Aamulla suuntasimme Atlantin maisematielle.

Ensin tunnelissa Bremsnesfjordenin alitse ja sitten useiden siltojen ylitse saarelta toiselle.

Matkalla bongasimme maihin huollettavaksi vedetyn öljynporauslautan ja upeita maisemia upeassa säässä.

Bud´n kylän jälkeen käännyimme itään kohti Molden kaupunkia ja sieltä remontissa olevaa tunnelia viereiselle saarelle, tunneli oli sen verran pimeä että tuli aivan vuorenpeikot mieleen…

Matkallemme osui toki yksi lauttamatkakin ennen kuin saavuimme Trollstigenille.

Trollstigeniltä jatkoimme Geiranger vuonolle joka taitaa olla Norjan kuvatuin paikka. Aikamoinen turistirysä jokatapauksessa.

Vuonoon laskeva ja sieltä nouseva tie ei paljoa häviä Trollstigenille ja luntakin oli vuorilla paljon, jotkut olivat liikkeellä suksien kera.

Geirangerin jälkeen jatkoimme kohti länttä ja Ottån kaupunkia jossa majoittauduimme Sjöan Gestehausiin.

Hieno vanha talo ja hyvä palvelu, isäntä järjesti meille viidelle illallisen vaikka saavuimmekin varsin myöhään.

Ajomatkaa kertyi 492 km

In the morning we headed to the scenic road the Atlantic road.

First tunnel under Bremsnesfjord and then over several bridges from island to another.

On the way we saw an oil platform towed to the shore probably for renovation and lot of beautiful sceneries as sun was shining.

At the village of Bud we turned to east towards the city of Molde and from there via a tunnel under renovation to next island.  The tunnel was so dark and wet that I just got the feeling of mountain trolls walking around.

We had one ferry on the way to Trollstigen. From Trollstigen we rode to Geirangerfjord that have been said to be the most photographed place in Norway.

Beautiful but the village is a real tourist trap anyway.

The road going down to village and after it back up to the mountains is not much worse than the one climbing up to Trollstigen and up there is yet a lot of snow. Someone were having even skies with them.

After Geirangerfjord we continued towards east and the town of Ottåwhere we stayed overnight in the village of Sjöa at Sjöa Guesthouse.

Really fine old house and splendid service, even though we arrived late the innkeeper arranged fine supper specially for us five.

Trondheim - Kristiansund

Aamiaisen jälkeen tihkusateessa liikkeelle.

Matkalla jouduimme pariin otteeseen pysähtymään tietöiden takia.

Norjalaiset käyttävät saattoautoa päällystystyömailla millä tehokkaasti pidetään kaaharit kurissa ja vauhti hiljennetään työkoneiden kohdalla minimiin.

Yleensäkin tällä reissulla Norjan liikenne eteni jonoissa eikä ohittelijoita juurikaan ollut. Tosin tiet ovat sen verran mutkaisia ja sakot sen verran suuria (kuulopuheiden mukaan), että liikenne on aika kurinalaista.

Päivämatka ei ollut pitkä mutta siihen sisältyi yksi lautta matka ja useita tunneleita.

Kristiansundissa majoittauduimme hotelli Astoriaan mikä osoittautui hyväksi valinnaksi. Hotellin johtaja on itse myös motoristi ja järjesti meille ilmaisen epävirallisen parkkipaikan vastapäätä hotellia.

Illalla kävelimme satamassa katsomassa museo telakkaa sekä veneitä.

Satamassa on myös vanhaan pajaan tehty kalaravintola jossa illastimme.

Ajomatkaa kertyi 197 km

After breakfast on the road, raining slightly.

On the way we had to stop a couple of times because of road construction works.

In Norway they seem to use a leading car to guide the traffic passing the construction area that is an effective way to keep the speedsters on line and to slow down close the actual road works.

In basic the traffic in Norway seems to be flowing neatly in line, practically no speedsters. Anyway all the roads are windy and the speeding penalties so high (as I have heard) that all are driving according to rules.

Our ride today was not so long but there was one ferry and many tunnels.

In Kristiansund we stayed in hotel Astoria that turned out to be a good choice.

The hotel manager is also a biker himself and he understood our parking problem arranging us free unofficial parking just opposite to the main entrance of the hotel.
In the evening we walked around the port to see old museum shipyard and of course the boats.

In the harbor we ate at a fish restaurant made in a building where used to be a smith working shop.

Today we rode 197 km

Mo I Rana – Trondheim

Aamiainen junanvaunu hengessä rakennetussa salissa hotellin kellarikerroksessa. Liikkeelle hyvissä ajoin jotta ehtisimme ajoissa Trondheimiin.

Kuten muinakin päivinä välillä satoi vettä ja välillä paistoi aurinko, hienoja maisemia ja tunneleita sekä mutkaista tietä vaikka ajoimmekin koko ajan päätietä E6 pitkin.

Pysähdyimme yhden todella hienon putouksen kohdalla juomaan kahvit ja ihailemaan putousta.

Trondheimissä navi näytti että pitää kääntyä kävelykadulle vaan kun en uskonut, niin pysähdyimme kadun varteen ja vahingossa kävelimme väärään hotelliin joka sattui olemaan saman ketjua kuin Mo I Ranan hotelli.

Avulias respan tyttö ehti laskea meidät kapeasta porttikongista sisäpihalle ennen kuin erhe selvisi.

Ei kun takaisin ja kadun toiselle puolelle jossa hotellimme oli piilotettu liikerakennuksen neljänteen kerrokseen elokuvateatterin yläpuolelle.

Täällä läppärini meni jumiin eikä suostunut enää käynnistymään uudelleen palatessamme illalliselta joten Helenan ottamat valokuvat jäivät saamatta ja joudun käyttämään loppu blogissa vain itse ottamiani kuvia.

Hotelli edustella oli MP parkki jossa bongasimme skootterin nastarenkailla.

Ajomatkaa kertyi 484 km ja päivän pisin tunneli oli noin 8 km

Breakfast in the basement of the hotel where is a hall decorated in railway theme. On the road early to get to Trondheim in good time.

As everyday it was raining and shining by turns, great scenery, a lot of tunnels and windy road even though we rode all the day on highway E6.

We had a coffee pause close to an especially fine waterfall that we admired for a while.

In Trondheim the navigator showed us to ride to the pedestrian zone but as I got muddled we stopped on the street at by accident got into a wrong hotel that happened to be the same chain as we had in Mo I Rana.

The lady in the reception was really helpful and took us into the yard before we found out our mistakeJ

So she had to help us out of the yard, great thanks about that, and we rode to the other side of the street, of course around the block where we found at that the hotel was hiding in a business center fourth floor just above a cinema .

Here my laptop got stacked and refused to start again after the supper, so the rest of the photos taken by Helena are not available for this blog. Now the rest of photos are taken by me.

In front of the hotel there is a parking area for motorbikes where we saw a scooter having tires with metal spikes. The locals do probably think that there will be ice on the road also in summertime…

Today we rode 484 km and the longest tunnel was about 8 km

Bodø – Mo I Rana

Aamulla hakemaan pyörät parkkialueelta ennen yhdeksää jotta paikallinen parkkipirkko ei päässyt laputtamaan.

Pyörien pakkaus ja ajo ilmailumuseoon jossa totesimme että lauantaina aukeaa vasta klo 11.00

Otimme muutaman valokuvan ja päätimme että emme jää odottelemaan vaan ajammekin rantatietä pitkin Mo I Ranaan jolloin matkaan tulee hieman lisää mutta kahdesta lauttamatkasta johtuen aikaa kuluu huomattavasti enemmän.

Tämä oli hyvä ratkaisu sillä rantatie oli maisemiltaan todella hieno.

Tiellä oli useita tunneleitakin joista pisin lähes 8 km pitkä, on siinä ollut poraamista.

Sää vaihteli jo totuttuun tapaan nopeasti ja välillä vähän satoi ja välillä aurinko suorastaan lämmitti.

Lauttamatkalla siirryimme takaisin napapiirin eteläpuolelle, mitä ei luonnosta tosin huomaa sillä Norjan ilmasto poikkeaa aika tavalla Suomesta.

Mo I Ranassa majoittauduimme Comfort Hotel Tobiakseen ja syömässä kävimme aivan vastapäätä olevassa ravintolassa jossa söimme todella hienot annokset.

Ei ollut tosin ihan halpaa.

Ajoa päivälle kertyi 306 km.

In the morning first to get the bikes away from parking area before 09:00 to avoid possible parking fee.

Packing the bikes and then we rode to aviation museum only to find out that it opens on Saturday only at 11:00.

We took some photos and decided that we do not wait that long but we’ll ride the smaller road along the coast to Mo I Rana instead of the highway. The ride was a bit longer and together with a couple of ferries it took much more time. Anyway that was a good decision as the scenery was really fantastic.

On the way there was several tunnels, the longest was almost 8km, a huge amount of drilling…

Weather was changing rapidly as always so some rain and some sunshine that almost made me feel warm.

During the ferry line we crossed the Polar Circle that was a small surprise as the nature/climate in Norway is totally different to the one on same level in Finland.

In Mo I Rana we took the Comfort Hotel Tobias and had supper in a restaurant opposite side of the street. The food was fantastic.

Anyway no so cheap…

Today we rode 306 km.

Ballstad – Bodø

Aamupalalla samassa ravintolassa kuin missä illastimmekin. Avasivat meitä viittä varten ravintolan aamulla, aamupala oli runsas ja maittava eikä edes pahan hintainenkaan.
Vielä kerran kiitokset isännille.

Kylällä pysähdyimme kalankuivaustelineiden luona, emme tosin pitkään sillä haju on melkoinen. Kalanpäätkin kuivataan ja kuulemma myydään jonnekin Afrikkaan.
Kuka tietää mihin käyttötarkoitukseen...

Ajoimme Lofoottien päähän Å:n kylään ja takaisin Moskenesin lauttasatamaan.

Satamassa ihmettelimme liikennemerkin asennusta, ei kyllä onnistuisi EU Suomessa.

Reilun tunnin odottelun jälkeen pääsimme lautalle ja 3,5 tunnin päästä olimme Bodøssä jossa majoittauduimme Radisson Blu hotelliin.

Ajoa päivälle kertyi vain 86 km.

Silti tälle matkalle osui matkamme tähän mennessä ainoa vaaratilanne britti asuntovaunuilijan yrittäessä tahallaan kiilata Mikaa ohitustilanteessa kaiteeseen, onneksi nopeat reaktiot pelastivat. Lauttasatamassa sama n.60v vesseli  tuli vielä soittamaan poskeaan keskaria esitellen. Että sellainen jalkapallo huligaani.

Hotellissa oli yläpuolisessa huoneessa pari nuorta kaveria jotka juhlivat oikein kunnolla ja taisivat pistää huoneenkin uuteen uskoon metelistä päätellen, eli eipä juuri tullut nukuttua…

Muutoin oli todella hieno päivä.

Breakfast in the same restaurant where we had supper. They opened the restaurant specially for us five and catered us a generous and tasty breakfast with a reasonable cost. Once again thanks to that.

At the village we stopped to get some photos of fish drying shelters even though the smell was really strong. They dry also the heads and as I heard they are sold to somewhere in Africa.

Who knows how they will be used…

We rode till the end of the Lofotes to the village of Å and back to ferry port of Moskenes.

At the port we saw the local way of mounting traffic signs, no way in EU Finland.

After an hour the ferry to Bodø arrived and we stayed in Radisson Blu hotel.

Today we rode only 86 km.

Anyway today we faced the only dangerous situation so far as a British couple with a caravan tried to wedge Mika to the railing when Mika was passing them, luckily Mika had fast reactions. At the ferry port the same about 60 years old guy came brawl showing mid finger. That kind of football hooligan.

At the hotel the room above us there was a couple of guys partying all the night and probably renovated the room totally, anyway it sound like that, so not much sleep on the whole night…

Otherwise a real nice day.

Narvik - Ballstad

Aamupalalle Oulun porukan jälkeen ja liikkeelle pääsimme yhdeksältä.

Ensin ajoimme takaisin samaa  tietä kuin eilen olimme tulleet kunnes tie erkani kohti Lofootteja. Narvikissa on käynnissä iso siltatyömaa ja mikäli vuonon keskelle ei tule tukipilaria niin kuin todennäköiseltä vaikuttaa, myös jänneväliltään vaikuttava.

Taitaa olla samaa kokoluokkaa kuin Hooverin padon silta Kaliforniassa jonka näin keskeneräisenä vuonna 2008.

Matkalle bongasimme F-16 hävittäjän Evenesin lentokentän lähellä ja helikopterin kiikuttamassa ortta sähkölinja työmaalle.

Sää Lofooteille vaihtelee varsin nopeasti joten välillä tuli vettä ja välillä paistoi aurinko.

Pysähdyimme Bøstadin Viikinki museossa, käymisen arvoinen paikka.
Pihalla oli pari villisikaakin.

Majoittauduimme Ballstadin Villa Ballstad´n ja kävimme syömässä saman omistajan ravintolassa. Vaikka en ole valaanpyynnin kannattaja niin kokeilin valaspihviä.

Lihaa se on sekin vaikka ei järin maukasta, no onpahan kokeiltu.

Norjassa ei pankkiautomaatteja ole turhan tiuhassa ja jouduimme ajamaan reilut 20km saadaksemme täydennystä valuuttavarantoon, samalla tosin tuli ostettua sauna kaljatkin.

Breakfast we had after the Oulu bikers group and on the way at nine o’clock.

First we rode again the same road as we had come yesterday until we turned to the Lofotes.

Close to Narvik there is under construction a huge bridge over the fjord and if there will not be any support in the middle as it looks like also the span will be remarkable.

Might be similar size as the bridge of Hoover damn in California, which I saw under construction in 2008.

On the way was saw a F-16 jet close to Evenes airport and a helicopter moving materials to a power line construction site.

The weather at Lofotes changes rapidly so we had some rain and sunshine.

We visited the Viking museum of Bøstad, a place worthwhile of visiting. They had even a couple of wild pigs at the yard.

We stayed at Villa Ballstad and had dinner in a restaurant of the same owner. Even though I do not support killing whales I tried the whale steak. Well its meat anyway not very tasty though, but now it’s been tested.

In Norway there are not too many cash automates so we had to ride about 20km to get some local cash and a couple of beers for sauna.

Today we rode 345 km.
